HÀ NỘI — The water in Hà Nội's Tô Lịch River has returned to its familiar polluted and foul-smelling state after running clear for a few days. On July 9, Hà Nội Sewage and Drainage Company opened two discharge gates from West Lake into the river by Trích Sài Street in Tây Hồ District, refreshing the water and turning it green.
To Lich River is about 14 km long, flowing through Ba Dinh, Cau Giay, Dong Da, Thanh Xuan, Hoang Mai and Thanh Tri districts of Hanoi City. For many years, the water of To Lich River has always been in serious pollution, stinking.

The chemical and physical parameters measured in To Lich river show that this river is polluted seriously. DO value is generally higher than the standard (the average DO value is 1.05 mg/l). The conductivity is always high (the average value is 62,88mS.m-1). This pollution affects the water quality of the downstream of Nhue river.
“In Việt Nam, one of the biggest problems with the Tô Lịch River is the thick sludge at its bed that is the source of the smell, and this could be solved by the nano bioreactor,” he said. The equipment was placed on the bed of a 300-metre section of the river.
The To Lich River used to be a branch of the Red River but was delinked by the French in 1889 as part of an urbanization plan. Over 200 sewage outlets empty 150,000 cubic meters of untreated household wastewater every day into it, according to the city Department of Natural Resources and Environment. Wastewater from factories adds to the pollution.
To Lich River could be connected with the Red River and other existing rivers. In the future, other polluted rivers such as Kim Nguu and Nhue can be renovated to improve the drainage system in the capital.
